  • An exciting new arts project is being unveiled by one of Cardiff’s most high-profile businessmen, Giovanni Malacrino.

The restaurateur and experienced businessman was the pioneer who established the first café quarter in the UK in Cardiff 25 years ago.

Now, a quarter of a century later, his aim is to complete the transformation of Mill Lane café quarter and bring in more artists to paint and entertain.

Giovanni said: “For this reason, I have decided to open an art gallery with a difference, bringing together painting, music, and food. The gallery is also available for private parties, filming, and product launches.”

The new hub will be called GCHQ (Gios Creative Hub Quarter) and its VIP launch will take place on November 9th.

The arts hub will host monthly exhibitions of work by Welsh artists and will provide performance and recording space for Welsh musicians, as well as providing a meeting place for food aficionados and bloggers.

Following the success of this year’s Mill Lane Art Week, the brainchild of Mr Malacrino, he aims to create vibrant monthly showings which will put the area firmly on the map of European art destinations.

    The first exhibition will feature:

    • The vibrant, contemporary paintings and prints of Cardiff artist Christopher Langley, a committee member of the South Wales Art Society. Working in oils, acrylics, and mixed media, Chris creates landscapes, abstracts, and street scenes. He has exhibited in New York, London, Glasgow, and across Wales and is inspired by artists including David Hockney and Corrie Chiswell. Discover more of his work here.
    • The modern, colourful abstracts of Cardiff artist Christopher Pompa, who creates paintings, collages, and mosaics. Inspired by Miro and Matisse, his works include upcycled media, original photographs, books, and postcards. Find out more here.
    • The watercolours of Carmarthen-born artist Tony Paultyn, who now lives in Swansea. He is known for his works inspired by the landscape of Wales, particularly of the Mumbles Railway. He travels the countryside of the UK creating his works for his large, international fan base, and has a studio in Kidwelly. Find out more here
    • The impressive street scene watercolours of South Wales artist Phil Ross, a member of the South Wales Art Society. He is also known for his paintings of cafés, coal mining, and landscapes. He has exhibited in several galleries across Wales. Find out more here
