    Giovanni’s - Winner

    38 The Hayes, Cardiff CF10 1AJ Tel: 029 2022 0077

    What they ate:

    • Calamari Fritti £8.45
    • Gamberoni alla Marchesa £7.95
    • Calzone pizza £10.95
    • Rissotto Modo Nostro £12.95
    • Tiramisu £5.25
    • Profiteroles £4.95

Where to begin? From the superb customer service from our waiter Ernesto to the complimentary shot of Limoncello after our surprise profiterole/ice cream/tiramisu dessert combo, it was a joy.

Pictures of the owner with various celebrities – from Joe Calzaghe to Prince Charles – adorn the walls of this very traditional Italian pizzeria. You could easily forget you were situated in Cardiff’s über-modern commercial wing, with Radley’s handbags opposite and Vivienne Westwood dresses just down the road.

Inside the green, white and red exterior is a slice of Tuscany. And though our meals included a Calzone pizza with chips INSIDE (yes, really) the meal was as traditionally Italian as you could hope it to be.

Numerous Peroni beers and Pinot Grigios arrived promptly and my own meal, the risotto, was well-balanced with thyme and a hint of Parmesan.

Without wanting to gush too much, the only fault I can find in this quaint little place is the cramped stairs to the basement where the toilets are awkwardly hidden away. Otherwise, a thoroughly lovely experience. I felt Ernesto had become my friend by the end of the meal and we were treated like kings.

Giovanni’s has another branch on the other side of the city centre and if it’s half as good as this little gem then it’ll be delightful.

I can’t believe I’ve lived in Cardiff five and a half years and never visited this place. Italian food is supposed to feel warm and comforting, rich and fuzzy. Giovanni’s ticks all of those boxes.

If you want a reasonably priced Thursday night out in a decent restaurant with more-than-decent food. Don’t miss this place – even though it is pretty easy to miss!

    Verdict: 10/10 (Source Wales Online)
